The Cyclades are a group of the Greek Islands set in the Aegean Ocean to the south east of mainland Greece with the Sea of Crete to the south. Consequently they all have the benefit of wonderful sunshine and crystal clear waters.
The most famous of these Islands are the stylish Santorini and Mykonos being part of the Central Cyclades as are the lesser known Islands of Naxos, Paros, Antiparos and Folegandros. The word Cyclades means circle and they do indeed circle the sacred island of Delos, famous for its Archaeological sites and reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo. Delos is largely uninhabited but easily accessible by boat from other islands.
Whilst Mykonos and Santorini have their own airport, other islands which make up the Western Cyclades and that group which make up the Smaller Cyclades are easily accessible by Ferry and ideal for island hopping. The Western Cyclades include the islands of Kea, Kythnos, Sifnes and Serifos whilst the smaller Cyclades include Iraklia, Amorgos, Donoussa, Koufonissas and Schoinoussa. You will find that each Island has its personality and, very often, its own capital town but all share the signature whitewashed houses dashed with blue, crystal clear seas, pink flowers and rugged landscapes. Temperatures are high in the summer months but the Meltemi winds which can be very cooling may also bring very choppy seas.
