Whatever Bespoke Theme Week you consider is right for you, your voyage of taking yourselves away from the everyday way of life through our exciting programs will be considerably enhanced by your stay at our chosen property. Our retreat is situated just a short distance from the City of Chania and overlooks the resorts of Platanias and Agia Marina, indeed from our chosen property there are 7* sunsets and views of the Bay of Chania. The suites and studios are well furnished and maintained with comfort, which are set around an impressive pool. It is a family run business with 3 generations of experience combining to make your stay truly memorable.

Package 1: Cretan Adventure

Enjoy a week visiting interesting places, history, tradition, culture and cuisine. Eat in local restaurants as part of the ambience of the day and learn, feel, invigorate the senses through the spirit of true Crete.

  • Day 1:
    Dinner
    Arrival on Crete, transfer to New Kydonia. In the evening enjoy a cold buffet dinner on site at 8pm.
    • Snacks will be available in the accommodation for any late arrivals.
  • Day 2:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    We make our way to an organic olive oil factory at Astrikas to be shown the traditional process of stone-pressed oil production. Biolea specializes in artisan production of organic, stone-milled and cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. The company’s oil is exclusively estate-produced and bottled.
    We then visit the family-owned exclusive Nostos winery at Vattolakos. Nostos harvests organically grown grapes and its delicious wine is produced and bottled on the estate.
    • Lunch in a local restaurant.
    • Return to accommodation.
    • Light buffet supper at 8pm.
  • Day 3:
    Breakfast & Lunch
    Today is a tour of the town of Chania and surrounding area with a walking tour of the old Venetian port looking at the indoor market, lighthouse, leather street, different architecture over the centuries left by occupying powers, a stunning venetian port.
    • Lunch in the backstreets at a local restaurant.
    • Free time in the afternoon to visit the maritime or archaeological museum, shopping etc.
    • Make your own return journey by bus or taxi as and when you like.
  • Day 4:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Visit the ancient site of Aptera on an elevation with spectacular views over Souda Bay. Mythology encompassed and a thriving city state, this hilltop site dates back to before the Minoan era. Monuments from Hellenistic period includes: Doric columns, theatres, cisterns and onward. A plethora of portable archaeological finds from this site can be seen in the archaeological museum in Chania. A photographic opportunity from the Turkish fortress built during the Ottoman occupation in the 1800’s. Into the hills to Hiliomouthou to visit a Byzantine church parts of which date back 1000 years, short tour of the religious wall depictions still in their original colours.
    • Lunch in a local taverna.
    • Light buffet supper on site.
    • The rest of the day is free.
  • Day 5:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Today we visit the Akrotiri peninsula. At the Greek Orthodox monastery of Agia Triada and the museum within, little has changed over the years for the monks who live, work and worship there and impressive frescoes and icons adorn the interiors. Coffee stop en-route and a photographic opportunity affording stunning views of the town and coast, a visit to Souda Bay Commonwealth Cemetery for Allied troops lost fighting in the WWII Battle for Crete
    • Late lunch will be taken in the village of Therisso where Eleftherios Venizelos began his mountain resistance against Ottoman Turkish occupation and pushed for unification of Crete (autonomous at the time) with Athens in 1913. The drive to Therisso is through a stunning gorge and there will be an opportunity to visit the small museum dedicated to the statesman and another to WWII (optional extra).
    • Supper is the traditional “souvlaki gyros in a pita bread” in a local “souvlatzithiko” shop close to the hotel.
  • Day 6:
    Free day to relax and enjoy the facilities on site. Visit the local beach, re visit the town of Chania, hire a car for the day to explore or take one of the optional tours available.

  • Day 7:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Today we visit the decommissioned reservoir lake a Agia home to migratory birds then inland through the citrus growing area to the mountain Botanical Park and take a 2 hour tour with our guide (walking shoes are necessary and the route has inclines).
    • Lunch at the park tasting their organic produce.
    • Farewell evening.
    • Champagne toast on the terrace at sunset.
  • Day 8:
    Breakfast
    After breakfast departure from the hotel to the airport for your return flight to the UK.

  • Day 1:
    Dinner

  • Day 2:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    What’s the secret of the Cretan diet? Extra virgin olive oil. More trees than you can imagine outnumber the residents by 500:1. Today we visit the organic olive oil factory Biolea, single estate, stone milled, cold pressed olive oil. This family run company has been successful in the challenge of bringing traditional olive oil production up to today’s food production standards and maintaining excellent quality. A short tour and tasting, the possibility to purchase. Continue to one of the oldest olive trees on Crete, coffee stop and a short tour of the museum.
    • Lunch in a local restaurant.
    • Return to New Kydonia in the afternoon
    • Buffet supper on site.
  • Day 3:
    Breakfast & Dinner
    Free morning to take a late breakfast, relax by the poolside or take a stroll and explore the surrounding village at New Kydonia. We depart at 2pm for our city tour of Chania and the outlying area, visiting the home of statesman Venizelos, the Russian Orthodox Church, the former British embassy building and the tanneries. A fascinating town which has been occupied throughout the ages sometimes centuries at a time and each conquering force leaving its influence and imprint. A visit to the local market on foot and a coffee stop halfway in the old sector.
    • From here we take a walking tour of the Venetian port of Chania making our way to our dinner venue which is an historical Ottoman Turkish bath house. Here we start a 5 course meal with 5 different wines and the resident sommelier tours the renowned wine growing regions of Greece through amazing dishes suited perfectly to each sip. History, flavours, ambience, culture and good company make for an exquisite evening. The chance to purchase.
    • Return to New Kydonia, approx. 10pm by taxi.
  • Day 4:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    After breakfast we shall meet at the on-site restaurant to discuss the knowledge acquired so far, go through recipes and the history of Cretan cuisine and begin preparing some local dishes together. Lunch is the fruits of your labour!
    Time to relax and in the afternoon we take a fun train tour through the surrounding area visiting an internationally awarded winery to tour, taste and the possibility to purchase, the citrus growing region of Chania and a peaceful orthodox monastery “metamorphosis” with breath-taking views.
    • These hidden treasures are a real treat.
    • Dinner in a local restaurant.
  • Day 5:
    Breakfast
    Free day to relax, return to Chania and visit the farmers market or pre book a tour.
  • Day 6:
    Today after breakfast we head eastward to Souda bay to visit the allied forces cemetery commemorating those who bravely lost their lives during the Battle for Crete WWII.
    Then we head inland for a photo opportunity of the stunning views over Souda bay from the Ottoman Turkish fortress at Aptera.
    Onward into the hinterland to our secret vineyard picnic location, where from 12am to 2pm we shall learn the secrets of viticulture, observe the reality of winemaking and enjoy freshly made food to enhance the flavours of his wines under the shade al fresco.
    Tasting and the opportunity to buy.
    We shall take a quick visit to a local artist potter and sculptor Manousos Chalkiadakis Greekceramics.gr with possibility to buy.
    • Return to New Kydonia and a free evening.
    • Please wear comfortable, flat shoes for walking in the fields.
  • Day 7:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    After breakfast a visit to the botanical park of Crete nestled in the mountains in its own micro climate. The park is a phoenix from the ashes after a serious fire destroyed a large part of the area. Take a two hour guided tour and lunch at the park, opportunity to purchase some of the products it produces.
    • Return to New Kydonia to relax.
    • Farewell glass of champagne at sunset.
    • BBQ/buffet on site
  • Day 8:
    Breakfast
    Departure to the airport for your return flight back to the UK.

It does not include personal expenses, coffee stops, drinks other than at New Kydonia and the wine tasting tours. Tips or gratuities to any staff. Sensible walking shoes are advised as some of the terrain is in cultivated areas, steps, uneven ground. A warm jacket/fleece in case of lower evening temperatures in spring and autumn, sunhat, sunblock etc.

The organisers in co-operation with the transport company reserve the right to change routes or destinations should the occasion arise due to road closures or unforeseen circumstances.

Package 3: Walking Tours – Ancient Pathways of Western Crete

  • Day 1:
    Dinner
    Arrival at the airport and transfer to New Kydonia.
    • Evening buffet on site wine included 7.30pm.
    • You will find a comprehensive breakfast pack in your apartment.
  • DAY 2 DEPARTURE 8.00AM:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Breakfast and into the White mountains to Agia Irini (650m). Hike through the Agia Irini gorge (3-4 hours) well known to botanists for the abundance of rich flora. Continue by bus to the coastal village of Sougia one of the oldest villages on the island with the ancient name Syia.
    Built on the ruins of Syia is the ancient port of Elyros which is cited as one of the most important cities in ancient Crete with its own currency. Further west from Sougia is a trail to another ancient city, Lissos, also a wealthy trading port with its own currency, customs house, commercial warehouses and residential quarters.
    • Late lunch by the sea and swimming weather permitting.
    • Possibility to swim weather permitting.
    • Dinner on site wine included. 7.45pm
  • Day 3:
    Breakfast & Dinner
    Departure after breakfast to the prefecture of Kissamos on the west side of Crete with a destination to the ancient village of Polyrrinia. Rivalling the power of ancient Kydonia this ancient city was built on a naturally fortified site with limitless views. Polyrrinia means a place with many sheep and the name confirms the lifestyle of animal husbandry at the time. Walk through the gorge of the same name (approx. 3 hours).
    • Lunch in a local restaurant..
    • Return to New Kydonia in the afternoon
    • Light buffet on site including wine 7.45pm.
  • DAY 4 DEPARTURE 8.00AM:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Possibly the most difficult day. After breakfast departure into the White mountains to the Omalos plain (1200m) to Rikia and from there an ascent to the summit Dioskouri (1500m).
    Time to relax and in the afternoon we take a fun train tour through the surrounding area visiting an internationally awarded winery to tour, taste and the possibility to purchase, the citrus growing region of Chania and a peaceful orthodox monastery “metamorphosis” with breath-taking views.
    This trail incorporates ancient shepherd stone huts and mountain stepped terraces. Descend and take the bus to the entrance to the Samaria National Park Gorge to discuss the geology and history of the mountain formation. En route back a short coffee stop at the bird sanctuary lake in Agia.
    Evening show of fascinating slides capturing flora, fauna and landscapes in western Crete and the White Mountains.

  • Day 5:
    Free day to relax or visit the town of Chania, the farmers market and the Venetian port or walk around the villages or coastal areas locally.
    Book an optional tour or rent a car.
    Restaurant open on site a la carte for lunch and dinner.
    Morning viewing at 10am of a documentary “Touch & Go - The Battle for Crete” approximately 90mins. Poignant to Day 6 walk.
  • DAY 6 DEPARTURE 8.00AM:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Departure after breakfast to the province of Sfakia to the village of Imbros via the mountain plain of Askyfou. Follow in the steps of the allied forces retreat during WWII hiking through the Imbros gorge to the south coast (3-4 hours).
    A visit also to Frangocastello (Castle of the Franks) built in the 14thC, a low lying fortress intentionally built to ward off Arab pirates. The possibility to swim weather permitting.
    • A lunch packet will be provided.
    • Buffet dinner on site at New Kydonia 7.45pm.
  • Day 7 DEPARTURE 9.00AM:
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Today is more a sightseeing day of great interest and importance, which takes us to the village of Topolia on a photo safari stop en route. A visit to the Neolithic cave of Agia Sofia of archaeological and speleological interest, to observe stalagmites and stalactites and the underground connection to the north Cretan sea. Onward to the south west coast to Hrisoskalitissa monastery (The Golden Step) visible only to the true believers! Then continue to the very south west corner to the coral island of Elafonissi associated with a tragedy in 1824 under Ottoman occupation where 850 locals were slaughtered turning the sea red. From here a walk to the unique coastal Cedar forest protected by the Natura 2000 environmental programme (1 hour walk each way.) A forest of cedar trees growing in sand dunes on the coast with rare sea lilies (pancratium maritimum) scattered at their roots. This flower was the symbol of “harmony” in ancient Greek philosophy.
    An interesting note for the area today south of Crete is the permanent existence of very rare Mediterranean Sperm Whales and their offspring in the deep waters surrounding the coast. A programme initiated as a research programme in 1998 Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute is documenting the members of this social unit and the study includes passive acoustics, visual surveys, photogrammetric and underwater observations etc. The number of inhabitants is very low (less than 200 individuals) therefore the unit is very vulnerable to human impact.

  • Day 8:

    After breakfast departure to the airport for return flight back to the UK.

TOP TIPS TO REMEMBER:Hiking boots, walking shoes, sticks, fleece, shower proof, shorts and long trousers, hat, sunglasses, sun block, backpack and water bottle are a must. Personal medication must be carried at all times and medical problems for-mentioned to the guide.
Possible changes to the programme due to inclement weather or road disruptions etc. depending on walk dates, alternative routes will apply.
Maps and info is provided, library at New Kydonia and free Wi-Fi. Laundry facility available at a cheap rate including detergent. Pool towels available (2E) to save on luggage kilos.
